Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal and India's largest city, a seething mass of activity with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Kolkata had become a busy & flourishing town, the center of cultural as well as political and economic life of Bengal. It isn't an ancient city like Delhi, with its impressive relics of the past. In fact, it's largely a British creation & was capital of British India.

Victorial Memorial: An splendid example of British architecture, this building was built in memory of Queen Victoria and was inaugurated by Prince of Wales in 1921. The Memorial is based on architecture of the Taj and is built in marble. The wrought iron gates, the lampposts, the brass cannons and the Statute of the Queen at the entrance every thing spells the magic of British monarchy and their grandeur.

The memorial today treasures many paintings, attires and other items used by the British during their rule in India. This building can also be termed as the British museum. In 25 rooms of the memorial are kept around 3500 items which are related to Queen Victoria.

Fort William: The Fort William stands solemnly on the Western bank of The Ganga. After the The Battle of Plassey ended in June, 1757. Robert Clive was deeply worried about the British destiny and what lay in store for Calcutta because the erstwhile fragile fort was easily captured by Siraj-ud-daula. Consequently, Clive decided to build a formidable fort to resist enemy onslaughts effectively.

The fort is still in use today and visitors are only allowed inside with special permission. Even the trenches and deep fortifications surrounding the fort's massive walls seem to be out of bounds.

KaliTemple: The present temple was built in 1809 on the site of an ancient temple. It is also known as the Kalighat temple. It is on the name of this temple that English gave the place name Calcutta that is anglicized form of Kalikata. The legend says that a finger of the Sati, wife of Lord Shiva, fell here. Since then it has been an important pilgrimage site and is always extremely busy.
